When you picture a car accident, the first thing that comes to mind may be high speed collisions where airbags deploy and significant damage is done. Luckily not all accidents are like this. In fact, 20% of all automobile accidents occur at slow speeds in parking lots. Still, even slow accidents lead to pesky insurance claims and in general are best avoided. How can you protect your vehicle from parking lot accidents?
Strategic Parking
Strategic parking can mean many different things. Always try to park in a spot that is reasonably easy to exit and free of blind spots. If possible, parking in a spot that allows you to pull forward when exiting will save you a lot of headaches and stress trying to meticulously back your car out of tight spots. Often times, it makes sense to try to park in more secluded areas of the lot as well. The chances of getting door dings will be greatly reduced, and a little extra walking may even be refreshing!
Look Behind You When Reversing
Rear view mirrors and backup cameras come in handy, but you shouldn’t solely rely on them. Looking over your right shoulder gives you a clear idea of where your vehicle is currently headed and if any vehicles are approaching your path.
Drive Slowly
Fast driving is for the highway and the racetrack. When you’re navigating through a parking lot, be sure to drive at a reasonable pace and pay very close attention to all surroundings. You never know when a child or a less competent driver might spring out of nowhere, and you should be prepared to react in time when these things happen.
Don’t Drive Distracted
Driving while listening to your favorite playlist is very satisfying, but make sure your music and GPS are queued up before you leave your spot! Of course, talking with people in your car is reasonable, but any activity that takes your attention away from your surroundings should be avoided.
