It’s no secret that electric cars are going to shape the future of the auto industry. While electric cars only make up 1% of all cars in the United States today, that statistic is going to grow considerably over the next several years. In fact, the US is aiming for 50% EV sales by 2030. That’s not a long time for such a rapid transition to take place, but it is entirely possible. Research and development for electric vehicles is at an all-time high. As advancements continue to be made in the following areas, in addition to the preexisting benefits of owning an electric car, we expect to see their growth grow exponentially.

Electric Vehicle Advancements We Expect to See Soon

Longer Range

Long range drivers may want to hold off a little longer before entering the world of electric cars. If you opt for a luxury model, you may be able to get around 300 miles per charge. Otherwise, you’ll likely be in the neighborhood of ~120 miles. That’s perfect for day-to-day driving, but it could introduce logistical problems if you have a long journey ahead. With a gas-powered car, you will likely be able to get 400+ miles before a quick stop to refill the tank.

Shorter Refuel

The shorter range of electric cars would not be so problematic if you could refill them as quickly as you can refill your gas tank. Instead, you’re looking at around 30 minutes to charge back to 80 percent capacity if you can find a fast-charging station. With a Level 1 or Level 2 charger, it may even take up to 8 hours for a refill.

Lower Price

Once electric cars have a lower price tag in addition to a longer range and shorter refill, they will start filling up our roads. That day is coming! These days, it’s possible to find new electric cars for under $30k, lowering the barrier to entry for purchasing your own. As the tech develops, the price will only continue to fall. As a bonus, federal plug-in tax credits will further incentivize new purchases.

The Evolution of Auto Mechanics

So, how will the upcoming surge in electric cars impact the auto mechanic industry? We’ve actually been through similar changes before when the industry shifted from carburetors to fuel injection. While concepts like tire changes and HVAC work carried over, the industry had to change its approach when servicing these new vehicles. Now, that is the case once again. In the era of electric vehicles, mechanics will be putting the tool bag aside to make way for diagnostic tools and code readers.

We can’t predict the future of the auto industry, but we’ll be sure to stay agile and ready to meet the needs of our customers through it all
